Corneille (1922-2010)
Corneille, born Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo in 1922, was a Dutch artist and a founding member of the avant-garde CoBrA movement, which emerged in the aftermath of World War II. Deeply inspired by children’s art, folk imagery, and non-Western cultures, Corneille developed a vibrant, expressive style marked by bold colors, fluid lines, and whimsical motifs. His early work reflected the raw spontaneity and experimental energy of the CoBrA group, but he soon cultivated a distinctive personal aesthetic filled with birds, cats, women, and lush, dreamlike landscapes.
Throughout his prolific career, Corneille remained committed to creating joyful, emotionally rich art that celebrated imagination and freedom. He traveled widely, drawing influence from African and Caribbean art, and his paintings often echoed themes of harmony between nature and humanity. Beyond painting, Corneille also worked in printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics, and his work continues to be celebrated for its lyrical, almost musical quality. His legacy lives on as a key figure in post-war European art, remembered for his poetic vision and enduring creativity.
