About

In 1966, Galleria L'Elefante in Venice hosted a significant group exhibition featuring prominent Pop Art figures such as Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, and Tom Wesselmann. This exhibition was organized in collaboration with renowned gallerists Leo Castelli and Ileana Sonnabend.

This exhibition was significant as it showcased prominent American Pop Art artists in Venice during a pivotal time for the movement. The same year, 1966, also saw the 33rd Venice Biennale, where Pop Art made a strong impression.

The Galleria L'Elefante exhibition provided an additional platform for these influential Pop artists to showcase their work in Venice, complementing their presence at the Biennale and further establishing the importance of American Pop Art on the international stage.

The exhibition was documented in the exhibition catalogue presented here, featuring black-and-white illustrations and staple binding. On the cover and in colour is Roy Lichenstein's ‘Cloud and Sea’, produced in 1964. This early catalog of the Pop Art scene is considered a valuable collector's item.
