The Galerie André Petit in Paris became an important venue for showcasing works by various influential surrealist and avant-garde artists during the 1940s. In 1949, it was especially active in exhibiting works by surrealists and modernist artists such as Salvador Dalí, Hans Bellmer, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Francis Picabia, and Yves Tanguy, all of whom were key figures in surrealism and other avant-garde movements.

Hans Bellmer, with his provocative figures; Dalí, with his dreamscapes; Max Ernst, with his fantastical creatures; René Magritte, with his thought-provoking juxtapositions; and Yves Tanguy, with his abstract surreal landscapes, were all frequent contributors to the movement's collective exhibitions.
