Donald Lipski (b.1947)

Donald Lipski was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1947 and raised in the suburb of Highland Park, the son and grandson of bicycle dealers. As a teenager, he began welding sculptures, earning The Scholastic Art Award in high school. He went on to major in American History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he also became active in the anti-war movement. While there, he discovered ceramics through his work with renowned artist Don Reitz. This led him to pursue an MFA in ceramics at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he studied under Richard DeVore and Michael Hall. From 1973 to 1977, Lipski taught at the University of Oklahoma before relocating to New York City.

Lipski quickly rose to prominence with his installation Gathering Dust, which featured thousands of small sculptures and was exhibited at Artists Space in 1978 and later at The Museum of Modern Art. Over the years, he has received numerous honors, including three National Endowment for the Arts grants, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rome Prize, and awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and Cranbrook Academy. His work is held in the collections of major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and The Menil Collection. In recent decades, Lipski has focused on large-scale public art, creating iconic works like The Yearling in Denver, Sirshasana in New York's Grand Central Terminal, and F.I.S.H. at the San Antonio River Walk. He continues to live and work in New York City.
